The research governance framework (Department of Health 2001) recommends that health and social care research in the UK should involve service users wherever possible. This theme therefore focuses on service users’ (e.g., patients, families and carers) experiences of health, illness and healthcare, with the aim of informing service development initiatives and future related research.

Modern healthcare is constantly evolving and, consequently, presents a multitude of diverse challenges, including new treatment regimes, evolving nursing roles and workforce, planning and organisational issues. This theme therefore focuses on evaluating and, developing service delivery and organisation in acute care settings; thus ensuring that service provision is based on best available evidence.
